Healing Qualities
Pohutukawa is valued by both European and Maori here in New Zealand, and is a protected species. It grows on the seashore, it can be seen clinging to cliffs and between rocks, sometimes its large branches hanging into the sea (as in a large tree at a beach I stayed at with family as a child). It appears red both in its wood, gnarled roots , often very large, which grow above ground and its brilliant red flowers which appear usually during December which is why it is sometimes known as the New Zealand Christmas Tree. Tradition says if it flowers early it will be a long hot summer.
In an article in New Zealand's 'Rainbow News' Barbara Bassett (Medical Herbalist, Classical Homoeopath & Naturopath of Self Heal Natural Therapies, Auckland (email: barbara@self-heal.com) wrote that herbal tinctures have been proved "to show that Pohutukawa has the ability to improve concentration, reduce confusion and to rid discouragement, doubt and anxiety. It eases fears around poverty and weakness and generally gives feelings of optimism and tranquility. At a physical level, we can expect improvement in headaches, sore throats, vertigo, dryness and cracking of the skin on the face and reduction of pain in the limbs, particularly arthritis.
